How are Kyron Drones and the Hokies viewed nationally?
There is excitement surrounding the Virginia Tech football program ahead of the 2024 college football season. Head coach Brent Pry brought back-to-back solid recruiting classes, but Pry’s biggest impact was through the NCAA transfer portal.
Almost every transfer the Hokies signed last offseason, made a significant impact in 2023. Amazingly, with the help of Virginia Tech’s NIL packages, Pry helped convince all of VT’s top players to return in 2024. No ACC team returns more starters on both sides of the ball than the Hokies.
One of those 2023 transfers who returned for 2024 is quarterback Kyron Drones. The former Baylor transfer took over as the starting quarterback early last season and the team’s offense took off. Drones’ presence opened up the running lanes for Bhayshul Tuten and his big arm made things happen in the passing game with wideouts Quan Felton and Jaylin Lane. Tech won five of its final seven games last season.
As we look ahead to the new season, some already have Virginia Tech as a preseason top-25 team. Is that a bit presumptuous? No. How can you not like a team that played so well late in the season and has everyone back?
About the quarterback position, how is Drones viewed nationally?
ESPN recently ranked all presumed 134 starting FBS quarterbacks into 20 tiers. Drones is in Tier 5:
Mertz, King, Drones and Bowman look like the obvious choices. All had some degree of success in Year 1 at their new schools, but all should be well-positioned to take another step in Year 2, with some pretty clear areas in need of improvement.
More:
Virginia Tech’s Drones looks like an emerging star after the way the Hokies finished the 2023 season, but it’s worth noting his emergence also came with a pretty light schedule. And when things got tougher, he struggled. In three games vs. top-40 (by efficiency), he posted a 46.4 Total QBR, 55.1% completions, 5.1 yards-per-pass, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Virginia Tech lost all three games.
Can you imagine how fun playing with the Hokies, Drones and all of their weapons in the new NCAA Football game will be?
