Remember Tommy Saunders? He was awesome.
That great David Roth – no, not that one – developed a bit while working at Deadspin where he would open packs of 80s and 90s baseball cards on camera and remember the guys. There are a lot of guys to remember from that era of baseball – Jeff Reboulet, for instance – so it is no surprise that Remembering Some Guys was a viral smash.
The format has also been a reliable engagement farm on Twitter, as posts like these tend to make the rounds every few months.
Men will literally sit around and name random sports players for two hours instead of going to therapy.
I have two thoughts about this tweet. Firstly, mental health is important. Take care of yourself, talk to your loved ones, seek the assistance of a professional. And also: Brad Ekwerekwu.
Let’s take some inspiration from Roth and remember some guys on Missouri’s offenses of the past two decades…
Do you remember another wide receiver from that same era, Greg Bracey? He supposedly had world-class speed. Every spring and summer the predictions would fly on the nascent Mizzou internet: this is the year Greg Bracey would break out. He would be the deep ball threat the team really needed. He would take the proverbial top off the defense. God, I was always so excited for Greg Bracey’s pending breakout.
He finished his career with 132 career receiving yards.
I remember Marcus Lucas. Unlike Bracey, he got better every single year and eventually caught almost 700 yards for the 2013 team as a senior. He was big and tall, something that was a defining characteristic of that 2013 receiving corps. Just a bunch of big tall dudes. As opposed to the 2022 receiving corps, which was just a bunch of really small dudes.
I remember Taylor Powell, who played in a few games behind Drew Lock, Kelly Bryant (!), and Connor Bazelak. Powell ended up at Eastern Michigan and actually had a really nice season leading them to a bowl game in 2022. Man, remember the Kelly Bryant year? That was weird. What was that?
There was Kendial Lawrence. He was great, he was part of a chain of running backs where it felt like Gary Pinkel just invented a new 5’8”, 185-lb pound guy each year who was going to rush for 900 yards. Every year there was a new one. Man, I really thought Marcus Woods was going to be the next big thing.
Darius Outlaw was so cool. He was a quarterback who turned into a receiver, which is always cool. He threw the reverse throwback to Brad Smith that went for a touchdown in the 2003 Nebraska win, which is, of course, very cool. And his name is “Darius Outlaw,” for cryin’ out loud, which is just about the coolest name I can think of right now.
Speaking of that Nebraska game, there are two kinds of people: those who can remember instantly who threw and who caught the fake field goal, and those who cannot. Obviously, I remember. It was Sonny Riccio and Victor Sesay, of course. Victory Sesay: a DMV native, like yours truly. Sesay (and fellow Washingtonian Jason Conley) were MY GUYS back in 2003.
That was when I was on campus. I didn’t follow much Big 8 football from the East Coast before that. So there are a lot of guys I don’t remember. I don’t remember Earnest Blackwell. I don’t remember Jeff Handy. I don’t remember Tiger Boyd, but man I wish I did. Tiger Boyd gives Darius Outlaw a run for his money.
I remember some linemen, too. It’s not just about the skill positions. I remember AJ Ricker, who was a coach on the TCU national runner-up team. I remember Kurtis Gregory, who was a damn fine lineman in the Chase Daniel years, and went on to a career in politics, where he helped shaped Missouri’s progressive NIL laws. What a True Son. I remember the entire 2013 line, four of the five of whom played in the NFL for like, a decade. And the fifth was the most legendary of them all, Max Copeland. Please tell me you remember Max Copeland. I hope you did not forget about Max Copeland.
