Zachary high football player killed in New Roads shooting – WAFB

NEW ROADS, La. (WAFB) – Officials have released the identity of a teen killed in a shooting early Sunday morning, May 19, in New Roads.
According to the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner’s Office, the teen is 16-year-old Jonathon Johnson. The family of Johnson confirmed to WAFB that he was a student at Zachary High School.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. on Carver Drive near Wilkins Avenue.
New Roads Police Chief Cedrick Epps said the teen was found with injuries at the scene and was taken to a hospital. The teen later died as a result of the injuries.
Jonathon who we affectionately called Jay was everyone’s love child. He was well mannered, smart and funny. He was an all around athlete but football was his true love. His smile would melt your heart. He was his mother’s world. It so many wonderful things we can say about Jay. He did not deserve to be stolen from his parents.
Johnson’s family said the teen always spoke about playing football out of high school so he could make his family proud. They also added that they believe justice will be served.
Police do not have a motive or suspect in mind at this time.
While investigating the deadly shooting, the chief said a separate shooting happened nearby. No one was injured, but a home was damaged by the gunfire.
Police said they could not prove whether the two shootings were connected.
Anyone with information that can help investigators is asked to contact the Capital Region Crime Stoppers by calling the number (225) 344-7867.
