Deportivo Riestra team seen during the match between Deportivo Riestra and San Lorenzo as part of … [+]
Ivan Buhajeruk is a Youtube streamer known as ‘Spreen.’ This Monday he managed to play one minute of professional football in Argentina even though in the warm up he barely looked like he had control over his own two legs. This episode came in a crucial fixture involving a Velez side aiming for title glory.
It’s a dark time in the weird and wonderful land of Argentinian football. It’s a professional top division with 28 teams and ever-changing formats, there have even been rule changes mid-season recently. Should we be surprised about a move like this then?
Surprising or not, it doesn’t matter. It’s a step too far and one that will only help to plummet the reputation of Argentina’s domestic soccer scene in international news. Here, a Youtube streamer and an energy drinks sponsor have cuddled up with league and club (Deportivo Riestra) bosses to make the unthinkable happen.
Many have voiced opposition to this crazy move in the aftermath of the game, and many have openly said they won’t give their opinion even though it is strong and clear in their minds. Without doubt those individuals are embarrassed by the incident, but don’t want to give any higher power reason to hold prejudice against them or their team in the future.
Deportivo Riestra have since apologised for offending anybody with this marketing stunt and claimed they meant no harm to their opponents or Argentinian football. League boss Chiqui Tapia also condemned the events openly, but with plans in place for this to occur well before the fixture took place, are the words of those in power really worth anything at all?

Despite this episode of outrage the football would continue and ‘Spreen’ was subbed off after just one minute and zero touches of the ball. Riestra managed to hold top of the table Velez to a 1-1 draw. It’s a promising result for other title challengers in Argentina as now Velez have managed to win just one of their last five league games. If the team doesn’t turn this form around then it is on course to have a league title stolen from its grasp.
Huracan is in second place, just one point behind Velez now, and as fate would have it Huracan will visit Velez in the very final game of the season, in a match that could be set up like a cup final that would decide the destination of the Liga Profesional trophy.
Racing Club de Avellaneda is in third place at the moment after a fabulous late victory this weekend, and a recent win over rival Boca Juniors too. Racing is six points away from Velez but has four league wins from five and find themselves in fantastic form after beating Corinthians of Brazil to progress to the Copa Sudamericana final.
Who does Racing play in the last game of the season? Rivals River Plate, of course. River Plate are seven points off the lead, meaning the club would need a massive effort to end up lifting the trophy, however stranger things have happened and River does have the scariest squad and most talent in this competition. The team has underperformed in the league this year and might have left things too little too late, but if the clubs above start to feel the pressure, River will be waiting to pounce after three recent league wins in just seven days and a monumental fanbase behind them.
