BOW VALLEY – Bow Valley athletes are already getting a taste of international competition this season, while some races are being played out on home soil.
FINLAND – After two years of being sidelined due to a knee injury, technical skier Kiki Alexander returned to the World Cup on Saturday (Nov. 17) in Levi, Finland. Alexander, whose home ski hill is Sunshine Village in Banff, did not finish (DNF) her first slalom run; however, the 23-year-old said it was awesome to be back.
"It's definitely been a very long journey to get back on the circuit, but I honestly couldn't be more stoked about [Saturday]," said Alexander in a social media post.
United States ski star Mikaela Shiffrin won gold at a time of 1:47.20, while Laurence St-Germain was the top Canuck in 10th place at 1:49.45.
In the men’s slalom on Sunday (Nov. 17), Erik Read of Canmore did not finish the first run. Starting with bib No. 46, the 33-year-old was on pace to be in the top-30 qualifications before skiing out of the gates.
The two-time Olympian is racing with World Racing Academy this season.
France’s Clement Noel won gold at a time of 1:53.98.
The World Cup returns Nov. 23-24 in Gurgl, Austria, with slalom races.
Lindsey Vonn has come out of retirement.
The 40-year-old slopes sensation has rejoined the U.S. Ski Team, she announced on social media. 
Vonn, one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time, is a three-time Olympic medallist and has won 137 World Cup medals, including 18 victories at Lake Louise, which she earned the nickname “Lake Lindsey.”
Vonn’s last World Cup race was in 2019.

JAPAN – Connor Howe of Canmore won bronze in the men's team pursuit along with teammates Ted-Jan Bloeme and Hayden Mayeur at the ISU Four Continents Speed Skating Championships in Hachinohe City, Japan, from Nov. 15-17.
In the individual races, Howe, a 24-year-old long track specialist, was kept off the podium in the 1,500-metre and 1,000m with a pair of fourth place finishes.
The Four Continents Championships are the warm-up to the World Cup, which begin next weekend (Nov. 22-24) in Nagano, Japan.

CANMORE – Olivia Bouffard-Nesbitt won the open women's interval skate race at the Nordiq Thunder 10km cross-country ski races on Thursday (Nov. 14) at the Canmore Nordic Centre.
The 2022 Olympian took first place at a time of 24:03.5. Taking second place was U23 world champion Sonjaa Schmidt (24:18.8) and Alison Mackie was in third (24:34.2).
In the open men's races, Tom Stephen finished in first place at a time of 21:33.8. Maximillian Hollmann, who had Paralympian great Brian McKeever in the barber's chair recently, finished in second place (21:37.0), and Peter Wolter was in third (22.01.1).
In Alaska, USA, at the FIS women’s 5km interval on Saturday (Nov. 16), Tabby Williams of Canmore finished in fifth place at a time of 15:02.2.
Williams, 20, who represents Great Britain, was one minute behind first place winner and USA’s Rosie Brennan, who is ranked in the top-10 in the world for cross-country skiing.
The new season of cross-country ski World Cup racing starts Nov. 29 in Ruka, Finland.
