The 5850 Fest—a Ketchum festival scheduled during the FIS World Cup Finals next March—is moving forward.
The Ketchum City Council during its Monday meeting approved festival street closures and a memorandum of understanding with 5B Productions, a local entertainment company organizing the festival.
As the council has approved the memorandum—a formal partnership document—the city will now be an official event partner and provide the equivalent of up to about $100,000 in services for the festival, including up to $80,000 for city employee overtime or contract services for work that will include traffic control, trash and snow removal, restroom maintenance and communication support. Additionally, the city will waive up to $20,000 worth of fees for fire inspections and permitting, use of water and electrical connections and use of public properties.
The $100,000 figure is a “generous” maximum estimate that will depend on factors such as how much snow removal is necessary at Forest Service Park, city spokesman Daniel Hansen said during the meeting.
“In all likelihood, it’s going to be quite a bit less,” Hansen said.
The council also approved the closure of Main Street between First and Third streets from noon on Friday, March 21, to 7 a.m. on Monday, March 24. Additionally, the council approved the closure of East Avenue from Fourth Street to Sun Valley Road and Washington Avenue from River Street to First Street between 7 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, and 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.
The festival—which will take place entirely in Ketchum from March 20-27—is being marketed as the Official Festival of the Sun Valley World Cup Finals and is expected to bring thousands of people to downtown Ketchum, 5B Productions co-owner Jenny Dupre said during the meeting.
“There’s a lot at stake, and this is really important for this city,” Dupre said. “Ketchum is ready for its close-up.”

So vendors shouldn’t have to pay a fee to 5B Productions since the city is subsidizing right?
I have no problem with 5B doing a for profit event.. As a taxpayer, I just don’t want to pay them to do it. They are selling VIP tickets for $5 grand. This is not an event for the working people of Ketchum.
The Ketchum City Council just handed over $100,000 to a for-profit party promoter. Shoudn’t it wor the other way around? Should companies that use City services reimburse the taxpayers? This Council has handed over millions of dollars of taxpayer money for corporate welfare. This is just one more instance of it. No wonder the middle class is being driven out of town.
