HOUSTON — On Tuesday, we got a status check on how things are progressing for World Cup 2026 in Houston.
The city is hosting seven matches and we’re now being told some modifications need to be done to NRG Stadium, namely the stadium floor has and has to be widened to fit a regulation World Cup soccer pitch inside.
It’s one of the updates provided by Houston’s host committee. The World Cup also includes a fan fest and the committee’s plan is for it to be held in East downtown.
“I can tell you right now that we are very focused on EaDo, East Downtown,” World Cup Host Committee President Chris Canetti said. “We’ve got an outstanding plan there to create EaDo as a destination where locals and internationals can gather.”
Matches start in June 2026. We’ve seen a lot of fan fests at the George R. Brown Convention Center, including one from the Final Four.
