MONROE, La. – The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team recorded its second-straight shutout versus the ULM Warhawks in Monroe, La., winning 2-0 on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Chants improve to 7-4-6, 3-1-4 in the Sun Belt while ULM falls to 8-7-2, 2-4-2 Sun Belt.
ULM came out firing from the first kick, taking two shots on goal in the second and third minutes, but Coastal keeper Aris Lamanna took care of the danger to hold the score at 0-0.
Redshirt-sophomore Tamlyn Parkes looked to get the Chants on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when she fired a shot towards the bottom left corner, but her shot was met by the hands of the ULM keeper to keep the match scoreless.
Coastal broke through in the 32nd minute when freshman Olivia Goretski out maneuvered the keeper to score in an open goal and give CCU a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks took three shots in the remaining 13 minutes of the half, forcing one save out of Lamanna to end the frame a 1-0.
Lamanna continued her top form making a huge 1-v-1 save in the 55th minute to hold onto CCU’s 1-0 lead.
Just seven minutes later, the Chants doubled their lead when Jessica Wheeler fed the ball to Julia Ziegenfuss who smashed the ball into the top left corner to make the score 2-0.
Each team took two shots apiece in the remaining 25 minutes of the match, highlighted by an excellent free kick save from Lamanna in the 88th minute to secure to 2-0 shutout victory.
"I’m really proud of how the girls battled tonight. The game was extremely fast paced for 90 minutes, and it would have been easy to conform to a different style of soccer but we were able to maintain our identity throughout, stuck to our principles and were able to grind out a win," stated head coach Jo Chubb. "This win was a huge step in the direction of prolonging our season a little bit longer. These girls are an absolute joy, so to see the smiles on their faces after the game, knowing they’d played so hard for each other makes me incredibly proud. They push each other each and every day and we are seeing the results of that on the field. As always, we enjoy tonight and then we’re back to work tomorrow. Chants up!
The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Oct. 27 to take on the Troy Trojans on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET and the Senior Day ceremony will begin after the conclusion of the match.
