Women's Soccer Falls to Quinnipiac in Semifinals of 2024 MAAC Championships – Canisius Athletics

Three second-half goals propelled No. 2 seed Quinnipiac to a 3-1 victory over No. 3 seed Canisius in the first semifinal of the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Thursday at the Quinnipiac Soccer and Lacrosse Field in Hamden, Conn.
The Golden Griffins end their season with a 12-4-3 overall record with the loss. The Bobcats meanwhile, improved to a 14-4-1 overall record as they advanced to the title game of the MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship for the fourth straight season.
The Griffs got their first shot of the contest in the 21st minute off the foot of senior Madeline Weltin, but Bobcats goalkeeper Sofia Lospinoso was able to corral it.
Canisius goaltender Jordan Spencer made a diving save in the 30th minute on Madison Mandleur to keep the game knotted at zero.
Early in the second half, senior defender Sophia Konstantinou was able to clear the ball over the net on an Aisling Spillane redirection to keep the game scoreless.
Quinnipiac struck first in the 52nd minute as Courtney Chochol was able to beat Spencer with an arching shot from outside the box to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats doubled their advantage in the 55th minute when Spillane was able to beat Spencer off a pass from Rachel Roman. Klara Bengtsson was also credited with an assist on the play.
Quinnipiac scored once more in the 83rd minute with Spillane’s second of the game off a free kick from Roman.
Junior Mia Iacona got Canisius on the board back five minutes later, beating Lospinoso off a pass from Skylar Cornell. Freshman Azaria Fagan also received an assist on the play.
GAME NOTES
• Thursday’s game served as the 16th contest between Canisius and Quinnipiac. 

• The Griffs scored their first goal against Quinnipiac since 2018 with Iacona’s tally
• The Golden Griffins only used three substitutions, the fewest in a game this season.
• Weltin led the Griffs with two shots, both of which were on net.
• Spencer faced the most shots on goal in a game this season with six.
• Fagan recorded her first career assist with the helper on Iacona’s 88th-minute tally. 
• Konstantinou ended her consecutive minute streak with 2,520 straight minutes played.
