Southern Miss announced a change in leadership of their football program after falling to 1-6.
After four season the Will Hall tenure as the head of the Southern Miss football program is now over.
USM AD Jeremy McClain announced a change in leadership Sunday evening .
“We are grateful to Will and his family for their dedication to Southern Miss over the past four years,” McClain said. “Will poured his heart and soul into this program and into shaping these young men. Unfortunately, the results on the field didn’t align with our shared goals and expectations.”
The Golden Eagles went 14-30 in four seasons under Hall. After losing to Arkansas State on Saturday, a team that hadn’t won on the road all year, USM fell to 1-6.
USM is last in the Sun Belt with a 1-6 record and 0-3. They are tied with Troy by USM has lost 5 straight. The Golden Eagle are last in points per game in the conference and next to last in the Sun Belt in points allowed.
Hall, a Amory native and son of Mississippi Sports Hall of Famer Bobby Hall, was seen as a great hire in December of 2020. USM had been through four coaches in fourth months before he came to Hattiesburg. He came in after being the offensive coordinator at Tulane for two seasons.
The Green Wave had one of the best rushing offenses in the country in his two years calling the plays. Some of that running success did translate to USM but not enough.
After 3 wins in year one USM won 7 games in 2022 and defeated Rice in the Lending Tree Bowl. In that game Frank Gore Jr ran for a NCAA Bowl Record 329 yards.
But USM could not improve upon that season. They have four wins to date since the win in the Lending Tree Bowl. Inconsistency and injuries at quarterback plagued the Will Hall era. At least three different quarterbacks played at least three games in each of Will Hall’s seasons.
Assistant head coach/general manger Reed Stringer will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season.
Southern Miss will be on the road this weekend as they play JMU.
