COPA AMÉRICA 2024
It’s probably the best time of the year for soccer fans, as Euro is underway in Germany and Copa America will start today on US soil.
Defending champions Argentina are the No. 1 favorites to retain the title. Lionel Scaloni’s players are considered Group A’s strongest team and will be expected to win in their opening game against Canada on Thursday.
Chile and Peru are in the same section and will be fighting, alongside Jesse Marsch’s team, for one of the two top spots to advance to the knockout rounds.
Argentina vs Canada will be the only game played today, while Chile and Peru will collide on Friday.
Argentina are also the current World Cup champions and will be willing to prove they are still the best national team when they take on Canada.
La Albiceleste have won 13 of their last 14 games after becoming world champions, only losing to Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. In those 13 matches, the South Americans scored 32 goals and only conceded two, which shows how solid they have been so far.
Despite losing to Uruguay in November 2023, Argentina are leading the 2026 World Cup qualifiers standings with 15 points, followed by Marcelo Bielsa’s side and Colombia.
Meanwhile, Canada have struggled way more than their opponents so far. Despite recording a goalless draw against powerful France in their last match, the North Americans have lost three of their last six games, including a 4-0 thrashing against the Netherlands.
After losing the Concacaf Nations League final to the USMNT in 2023, they lost to the Americans again in the Gold Cup quarterfinals in the penalty shootout.
Canada weren’t any luckier in the latest Nations League edition, with the team losing to Jamaica in the quarterfinals after winning the first leg and losing the second one. The Caribbean side advanced to the next round by being more inspired on penalties.
