EURO 2024
The Netherlands are the biggest name on today’s Euro 2024 schedule, as the last 16 comes to a conclusion with clashes in Munich and Leipzig. Alongside the Dutch, three teams who are far from knockout-stage regulars are bidding to be one of the last two sides added to the quarter-final line-up.
Romania are in the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time since Euro 2000, having topped a historic Group E. After all four teams finished on four points – the first time this has happened at a European Championship – Edward Iordanescu’s men edged out group favourites Belgium for first place on goals scored. The Netherlands, meanwhile, had to settle for third place in Group D.
The Oranje took four points from their first two games in Germany – but defeat to Austria on matchday three saw the Dutch slip off top spot and end up outside of the section’s automatic qualification berths. The Netherlands’ points tally was enough to take them through as one of the best third-placed teams, however. The 1988 continental champions will now attempt to claim their first win in a knockout tie at the Euros since they reached the semi-finals in 2004.
The Netherlands have an excellent record against Romania, albeit there is little in the way of recent head-to-head form to examine. The Dutch have lost just once in 14 clashes with the Romanians, but the teams’ only match-up in the past decade was a 2017 friendly in Bucharest, which the visitors won 3-0. In major tournaments, the nations’ only meeting so far was a 2-0 victory for the Netherlands in the group stage at Euro 2008.
Austria’s final-round triumph over the Dutch meant that Ralf Rangnick’s side were the surprise winners of Group D. Not only did the Austrians consign the Netherlands to third, but they also leapfrogged two-time European champions France, who finished second. It is the first time since the 1978 World Cup that Austria have topped their group at a major tournament, and this will be only their second ever appearance in the knockout stages of the Euros.
Turkey progressed to the last 16 by taking second spot in Group F, thanks to wins over Georgia and the Czech Republic. The Turks have not featured in the tournament’s knockouts since making it to the last four in 2008.
This will be Austria and Turkey’s first ever encounter at a major tournament. Per Opta, Turkey are unbeaten in their last five competitive matches against Austria, although the most recent of those was 13 years ago – a September 2011 qualifier for the European Championship. The teams’ most recent friendly meeting came just three months ago, though, and produced a startling result: Austria thrashed Vincenzo Montella’s side 6-1 in Vienna, Michael Gregoritsch grabbing a hat-trick for the hosts.
