Syracuse clinched a bowl game after its best regular season since 2018, with a 9-3 record. Syracuse, behind star quarterback and Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord, also clawed its way into the Top 25 after its final game of the season — a 42-38 win over the then-ranked No. 13 Miami Hurricanes.
Now they arrive in San Diego to clash with a program in what can only be described as chaos. Washington State saw 27 players enter the transfer portal after this season, with only three of that number expected to play against Syracuse. That includes quarterback John Mateer, who was reportedly given $1.5 million to transfer to Oklahoma.
For Syracuse players, they are trying not to let the mayhem on the other side of the field impact their outlook on the game.
"We try to treat every opponent the same," said linebacker Justin Barron, asked if he was disappointed to be facing a decimated Washington State roster. "We were in the opposite position last year. It’s something we experienced…They’re still at full strength to me. I’m not going to treat them any different because guys went in the portal. Those guys who have been backups all year are probably going to play harder than they’ve ever played before."
