The Detroit Lions meet the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California to finish Week 17 of the 2024 NFL season.
The Lions (13-2) will be playing for the NFC North Division title, the NFC’s No. 1 seed and a first-round bye next week at home against the Minnesota Vikings, no matter what happens in tonight’s game. The Lions will play their starters anyway, according to coach Dan Campbell, who wants a win over the team that knocked him out in January.
The Niners (6-9) have been eliminated from the NFL playoffs, have lost five of six and are last in the NFC West.
These two teams met in the NFC championship game 11 months ago, with the Niners rallying from 17 points to stun the underdog Lions, 34-31. For a franchise that has never even appeared in the Super Bowl, it’s a loss that will continue to haunt until the ultimate prize is secured.
The 49ers suffered a gut-punch loss of their own two weeks later in a 25-22 overtime loss in Super Bowl 58 to Kansas City.
But the Lions and 49ers have gone completely separate ways this season, with Campbell using the NFC title game loss as another painful lesson learned.

Carlos Monarrez, Detroit Free Press: What was supposed to be an epic showdown is sure to turn into an epic beatdown. Maybe not quite to the level we saw in Dallas, but close enough. The Niners were losing close games with Christian McCaffrey and now that he’s out of the season, they’re getting trucked by teams such as the Dolphins. In the final Monday night game of the season, Ben Johnson is sure to pull out some trickery that will haunt the dreams of defensive coordinators the Lions might face in the playoffs. The pick: Lions 42, 49ers 17.
Spread: Lions (-3).
Over/under: 50½ points.
Moneyline: Lions (-185), 49ers (+150).
