Kansas State’s football team will wrap up its regular season against Iowa State on Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, with much still at stake.
While they could be mathematically eliminated from the Big 12 championship race by the time kickoff rolls around at 6:30 p.m., the Wildcats (8-3, 5-3 Big 12) still could greatly enhance their bowl game prospects by upsetting No. 17-ranked Iowa State (9-2, 6-2).
Colorado, Arizona State, Brigham Young and Iowa State started the week tied for the Big 12 lead at 6-2, and Colorado (9-3) already blew out Oklahoma State, 52-0, on Friday. Should Arizona State win at Arizona on Saturday afternoon, that would slam the door on K-State, and even if the Sun Devils lost, BYU also would have to fall in its 9:15 p.m. home game with Houston.
Regardless, beating Iowa State would be sweet payback for the Wildcats after the Cyclones played spoiler with a 42-35 victory last year in a Manhattan snowstorm. It also would leave a 10-win season in play for K-State with a bowl win.
But the stakes are even higher for Iowa State, which could clinch a championship game berth and also reach 10 wins for the first time in school history by holding off the Wildcats. Not to mention the fact the Cyclones would remain alive for a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.
