What can we expect from Argentina World Cup winner, soccer star and national team captain Lionel Messi in 2025? The legend will turn 38 years old on June 24th, but millions across the globe will still hope for some ‘Messi magic’ to light up their screens in the near future.
Last season Lionel Messi was voted the best player in the MLS, starting 18 games, appearing in 22 in total and scoring an impressive 21 goals from an xG of little over 14. The famous number 10 also provided 11 assists in those games. Can he beat those numbers in 2025?
Aside from surpassing those statistics, Lionel Messi still hasn’t got his hands on the MLS Cup. Yes, Inter Miami won the ‘supporters shield’ last season, meaning they picked up the most points during the regular season. However they faltered in the play-offs, were defeated by Atlanta and had to watch the LA Galaxy become champions of U.S soccer for 2025.
Therefore, despite clearly being the best player in the country, Messi still has some goals he is yet to achieve with Inter Miami. Messi will also compete for other domestic cups and hopefully steer clear of injuries like those that hampered him at stages last year.
On Saturday, January 18th, Inter Miami take on Club América of Mexico in their first exhibition match of the calendar year.

Messi and Inter Miami have a unique challenge awaiting them in 2025; the FIFA Club World Cup. The first tournament of the new format takes place in the U.S this summer and Inter Miami were announced as competitors after they picked up the 2024 supporters shield.
For many, this was a controversial move as the MLS Cup winners weren’t given the same prize. Obviously having Lionel Messi in the tournament is a big marketing coup for FIFA and this is how things have transpired; much to the demise of LA Galaxy supporters.
Inter Miami is in a group with the likes of Brazilian side Palmeiras as well as FC Porto and Al Ahly. It will certainly be a difficult one to get out of, but such an achievement isn’t a requirement for Messi and Miami, it would just be seen as a huge bonus and certainly an unexpected achievement given the quality of opposition the MLS side will be facing.
Argentina face a tantalising clash with neighbours and rivals Brazil in March and there is absolutely no doubt that Lionel Messi is thinking about that fixture more than any other for the upcoming year.
It’s no secret how much he still loves to play for his country and it doesn’t come much bigger than five-time World Cup winners Brazil visiting Buenos Aires to take on Lionel Messi and the current World Cup champions.
Lionel Messi’s team will complete FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifying this calendar year. Then, whether or not he is still around to compete in the tournament is on him and his fitness state, of course fans globally would love to see Messi play in the U.S, Mexico and Canada the following summer, but he will be turning 39 by the time that tournament comes around so it’s certainly not a given that he will be playing in that tournament.
Either way, getting his nation there and finishing first place ahead of the likes of Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia in South American World Cup qualifying will certainly be Lionel Messi’s priority for 2025.
