Jamal Jones, the football coach under investigation for allegedly slapping and shaking players at a team camp in McMinnville, has resigned from his position at Westview High School, according to an email from the school’s principal to Westview parents.
“We are prepared to move forward as Jamal Jones has resigned from our head coaching position, effective immediately,” the email from WHS principal Matt Pedersen reads. “There is a meeting with our assistant coaching staff later this morning and more information around team gatherings, football workouts and practices will be coming out soon. Our goal is to work to ensure our players and their families feel safe returning to the Westview football program and for our student-athletes to be able to look forward to a successful season.”
Pedersen went on to say the school will begin the process of identifying an interim coach for the Wildcats. Jones, who spent one season as Westview’s head coach following a year as coach at Franklin High School in Southeast Portland, is also on leave from his job as an officer with the Hillsboro Police Department.
According to an initial report from the McMinnville Police Department, officers conducted a welfare check at the Linfield University campus at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in response to a call about the alleged incidents. The report states Jones “allegedly started waking up students on the WHS team in the early morning hours by shaking and/or slapping them while they were sleeping.”
