Super Eagles star Gabriel Osho is confident that the team can qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their poor start to the qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Super Eagles are one of the top countries on the continent, but they have often flattered to deceive. Nigeria missed out on the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and they are in danger of missing out on the next one set for Canada, Mexico, and USA.
The Super Eagles have accrued just three points from their first four qualifying games. They drew at home to Lesotho in their first game, drew the second game against Zimbabwe in a neutral venue, drew to South Africa in Nigeria, and lost to Benin at a neutral venue.
Nigeria currently sit fifth in Group C, four points below table toppers Rwanda. And with six games left, their chances of qualification is bleak.
Nonetheless, Gabriel Osho who got his Super Eagles debut last month believe that Nigeria still have the quality to change the status quo.
“We have to focus on the World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON. After the last competition, our goal is to progress and triumph. I think we have enough talent.
The quality of our team is probably the best in Africa. It is time to assert it on the big stage,” Osho told Flashscore.
“We have to play to our ability. I am confident we can do it. The qualification is longer in this format, so we have time. We have games that will allow us to rectify the situation.
Everyone is eager to participate in the World Cup, and I am sure we will do everything possible. God willing, we will qualify,” he revealed.
The World Cup Qualifiers will resume in March 2025, with Nigeria set to take on Rwanda in their next game. The Super Eagles have to win that game to set the tone for the remaining fixtures.
