WC 2030: Uruguay and Estadio Centenario prepare for tournament The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) and the authorities in Montevideo have been working for some time with the year 2030 in mind. However, it is not the only number they are focused on. There is another figure that represents the most complicated aspect of the stadium project for the World Cup: $160 million.

This is the estimated amount needed to upgrade Estadio Centenario to meet FIFA’s requirements. The government of Uruguay has begun talks with the CAF – Latin American Development Bank to secure some loans, but AUF and the authorities in the capital, Montevideo, need to explore alternative funding sources for the project, for which a tender is expected to be issued in the second half of 2025. Uruguay is currently undergoing a government change, which is linked to a shift in political orientation, so some of these decisions will be made by the incoming administration. According to information provided by Uruguayan media, AUF President Ignacio Alonso is expected to meet with Uruguay’s newly elected president, Yamandú Orsi, in January or February.
Both AUF and the Montevideo authorities believe the largest funding will come from the private sector. One of the issues currently being discussed is the possibility of selling the naming rights to Estadio Centenario. Uruguay is already planning how the VIP areas at Estadio Centenario will look for the 2030 World Cup, how much tickets for the matches will cost, which stadiums will be available for training sessions, and which areas will be designated for fans.

Previously, along with Argentina and Paraguay, Uruguay presented a document titled La historia vive, which formalizes the bid to host some of the matches. The document emphasizes full support from President Luis Lacalle Pou’s government and the authorities in Montevideo for organizing the tournament. It also highlights some of the economic impact figures that hosting the event will bring. Ticket prices will range from $25 to $600, with the higher price covering hospitality packages primarily available to corporate clients. The document also provides detailed descriptions of how the VIP areas will be designed: They will offer top-class services, luxury amenities, and privileged views, ensuring a premium experience for attendees. These hospitality areas, with a refined atmosphere and personalized service, will not only enhance the audience’s experience but also contribute significantly to overall revenue.
