Virginia converts its longest offensive play of the game as Tony Muskett gets outside the pocket and finds Suderian Harrison down the right sideline for a 24-yard pickup. Muskett just barely overthrows Tyler Neville on a pass down the seam that might have scored a touchdown. Virginia Tech holds after that and UVA is forced to settle for a field goal. Will Bettridge comes on and converts the 37-yard field goal to get the Cavaliers on the board.

Muskett tries to hand the ball off and miscommunicates with his running back, but he's able to make something out of nothing, rushing for another first down. The Cavaliers find themselves in another third and long situation and Muskett tries a deep ball for Trell Harris, but the pass is well-covered and broken up by Mansoor Delane. UVA picks up a couple of first downs but ultimately punts again.

Virginia Tech advances the ball into UVA territory, but the Cavaliers are able to make a stand after a holding penalty gets the Hokies behind the chains. John Love comes on and knocks his 44-yard field goal attempt through the uprights. Virginia Tech leads 10-0.

Virginia Tech has poor field position to start the drive thanks to a great tackle from Ethan Davies on the opening kickoff, but it doesn't matter as the Hokies drive 90 yards in 11 plays to score on their first possession of the game. Pop Watson found Da'Quan Felton wide open in the middle of the field for 42 yards and then Bhayshul Tuten found the end zone untouched on a six-yard touchdown run.
