Bears showing up in populated areas are becoming increasingly common, and a video of a bear crossing a Tahoe-area football field during practice is just another example.
Truckee High School’s football team was in the middle of practice as everybody stood and watched a black bear move across the field.
“The possibilities at a football practice in Truckee are vast….snow, lightning storms, hail, coyotes taking out voles or maybe the birds of prey swooping down on the varmints…or a Black Bear making his way through old wetlands of Meadow Lake,” a social media post from the team this week read.
According to the team, this happens every now and then where animals usually cross the field to get back into the woods.
Wildlife officials have warned in the past of increased bear activity regardless of how many people are in the area. Bears are normally avoidant of people, but in recent years, more instances of bears out in public have occurred.

As a result of these increased encounters, the state of California is working on a Black Bear Conservation plan to minimize conflict between humans and black bears.
As part of the draft report, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released data from its Wildlife Incident Reporting System, a standardized recordkeeping effort that began in 2017.
The data show a big increase in human-black bear conflict incidents during 2021 and 2022.
