The College Football Playoff has a new format this season and with 12 teams entering the competition, bowl game distribution will now differ. As Texas claims the No. 5 seed of the tournament, the team’s path to the championship will take the Longhorns through familiar territory.
Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (Atlanta, Georgia)
As the name implies, the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl will once again take place in Atlanta, Georgia, this season. The Peach Bowl dates back to 1968 and began with a six-man committee that received its NCAA certification in the same year. While the contest takes place in Atlanta every year, it didn’t start that way, with the infamous bowl game holding its first three contests at Georgia Tech’s Grant Field. The Peach Bowl transitioned to its current home in Atlanta in 1971. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons, accounts for up to 75,000 fans and was already host to a Texas contest this season in the Southeastern Conference Championship. Though Bevo may not be allowed within the confines of the stadium, the Peach Bowl may be the perfect place for Texas to reclaim redemption from the SEC Championship. The most recent teams to participate in the Peach Bowl were No. 11 Ole Miss and No. 10 Penn State, a contest the Rebels won 38-25.
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic (Arlington, Texas)
The first Cotton Bowl Classic dates back to 1937 in a matchup between TCU and Marquette. While the Cotton Bowl was originally played in the Cotton Bowl Stadium, another stadium the Longhorns are very familiar with, the game was eventually moved to the current home of the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. AT&T Stadium currently has a capacity of up to 80,000 people but can be expanded to 105,000 with standing-room-only areas. This year’s Cotton Bowl will be the 89th in its history and will potentially host a Texas, Clemson or Arizona State matchup between Tennessee, Ohio State or Oregon. Texas has had 22 appearances total in the Cotton Bowl, with 2003 being the latest. The latest teams to compete in the Cotton Bowl were No. 9 Missouri and No. 7 Ohio State. Missouri would go on to win the game 14-3 in the Tigers’ final game of the season.
National Championship Game (Atlanta, Georgia)
Texas has not competed for a national championship since 2009 and now the team has its second chance in two years to do so. If the Longhorns can carry themselves to yet another national championship appearance, they will do so in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. So far, Mercedes-Benz Stadium has not been kind to the Longhorns, but it has the potential to be the final destination for Texas this season. Mercedes-Benz Stadium has now hosted two national championship games and is set to host its third at the end of this season. While the last two teams to compete for a national championship were No. 1 Michigan and No. 2 Washington, the latest teams to compete for a championship in Mercedes-Benz Stadium were No. 1 LSU and No. 3 Clemson in 2020. While Texas has not had a good track record in Mercedes-Benz this season, it will now have two chances to improve its record this postseason.
