ESSEX JCT., Vt. (WCAX) – The University of Vermont Mens Soccer Team is poised for a historic semifinal match Friday in the NCAA College Cup.
The Catamounts will make their tournament debut at 5 p.m. when they take on the University of Denver in North Carolina.
It’s been a long road on the road for the Cats, who played their last game at Burlington’s Virtue Field back on November 21 in their first-round game against Iona.
As the Cats got their practice in Thursday morning, excitement was building back home for the big match. Many people we spoke to said they are extremely proud of what the soccer community in Vermont has accomplished this year. At a Far Post soccer club practice in Essex Junction on Thursday, the young players were fully aware of the success of local soccer teams like the Vermont Green, Middlebury, and UVM.
Vermont Green sporting director Adam Pfeifer/ says the coach and team’s success is important for young players in the community. “Just done an incredible job for for obviously for that school, but also also the community and raising the level of soccer in the Community. And it does give young kids belief that they can achieve those heights,” he said.
The game starts at 5 p.m. and airs on ESPNU or the subscription service ESPN+.
