EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Former USC and Boise State quarterback Malachi Nelson has committed to UTEP, according to a report released Sunday from ESPN's Pete Thamel.
A former five-star player, Nelson was ranked as the #1 overall recruit in ESPN's class of 2023.
Nelson has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining, after spending his first two seasons as the backup quarterback to Heisman trophy-winner and former #1 overall NFL draft pick Caleb Williams at USC in 2023, and as the backup to Maddux Madsen at Boise State this season.
Over his two year collegiate career, Nelson has completed 13/20 passes for 128 yards, and has thrown an interception.
As a senior at Los Alamitos High School in California, Nelson threw for 2,898 yards and 35 touchdowns.
He won back to back California Gatorade Player of the Year Awards, and received offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame, among other schools.
He joins the Miners for their final season as part of Conference USA, before they move to the Mountain West Conference in 2026.
If confirmed by the team that Nelson has in fact committed to UTEP, he will be the most decorated recruit in program history.
