The U.S. women’s national team has dropped to its lowest international ranking since 2003.
Emma Hayes’ squad dropped to No. 5 in June’s FIFA Rankings; a one-spot drop from the last rankings in March. FIFA began Women’s Rankings in 2003, which is the last time the USWNT were as low as they currently are.
The USWNT are 8-1-1 across all competitions this year, winning the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup in March and the SheBelieves Cup in April. The lone defeat for the Americans came in their final Gold Cup group stage match, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mexico.
Hayes’ first matches in charge of the USWNT came earlier this month in a pair of home friendlies vs. South Korea. The Americans rolled to respective 4-0 and 3-0 victories in Commerce City, Colorado and St. Paul, Minnesota.
Preparations continue for the Americans this July with a pair of final Olympic tune-ups against Mexico and Costa Rica respectively.
The USWNT’s Olympic group stage schedule begins on July 25 against Zambia before the Americans also face Germany (July 28) and Australia (July 31).
Spain currently occupies the top spot in FIFA’s Rankings while France, England, and Germany are also ahead of the USWNT. Sweden, Japan, Canada, Brazil, and North Korea round out the Top 10.
Not surprised and should provide further motivation for the Olympics!

What’s more shocking to me is North Korea, they haven’t played an international tournament in over ten years. Reminds me of El Salvador a couple years ago rising into top 50 by blasting small Caribbean Island nations. Beating up on Hong Kong, Mongolia, and Mariana Islands by a combined score of 47-0 boosted that ranking.
