The USA crushed Panama 4-0 in 2017 and 5-1 in 2022 in key World Cup qualifying matches at home, but Los Canaleros have often given the USA problems, most recently winning in a shootout (against a “B” team) in the 2023 Gold Cup semifinals.

In October 2021, Los Canaleros won their World Cup 2022 home qualifier 1-0 in Panama City. The game marked Tim Weah’s first start under Gregg Berhalter, a forgettable outing for him and his U.S. teammates. Less than three years later, Weah is all but an automatic choice and should start when the USMNT faces Panama on Thursday in Atlanta.
• What They’re Saying: “I think we’re in a situation where we’re less worried about Panama right now,” Weah said. “We don’t know which Panama team we’re going to get. We just make sure that we come out 100% and not take anything for granted. Put all our cards on the table and make sure we execute in the way that we want to execute. We know what Panama is capable of and we just have to make sure we’re on our A game.”
