CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WBTV) – The University of North Carolina is firing its Hall of Fame, national championship-winning head football coach, the school announced Tuesday morning.
Mack Brown, who is in his second stint with the Tar Heels, has more wins than any other coach in program history.
UNC is 6-5 heading into the regular-season finale against rival North Carolina State. The university said Brown will coach against the Wolfpack, but a decision on the Tar Heels’ bowl game has not yet been reached.
“We deeply appreciate all that he has done for Carolina football and our university,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. “He and his wife Sally have done an outstanding job supporting the Carolina community, including raising funds for UNC Children’s Hospital while hosting other popular events such as the Ladies Day Clinic. Both also have been terrific in leading our program during some incredibly tough stretches, including the tragic passing of wide receiver Tylee Craft.”
Cunningham gave Brown credit for improving the program’s facilities, increasing the size of the staff, boosting salaries, and bolstering the team’s nutrition and strength and conditioning programs.
Brown was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, and won the 2005 national championship with the University of Texas.
He began his current stint in Chapel Hill in 2019 after previously coaching at the school from 1988-97. Brown also served as the head coach at Appalachian State in 1983.
