Plans for a UK bid to host the Fifa Women’s World Cup in the 2030s have not been derailed by the United States and Mexico’s switch in focus to hosting the 2031 tournament, according to PA Media .
Hosting the showpiece event for the first time was one of the most eye-catching items on a list of major events targeted by UK Sport earlier this year.
The US and Mexico had been one of the bidders for the 2027 finals but have now turned their attention to hosting a “record-breaking” tournament in 2031.
A feasibility study, which will consider how ‘winnable’ hosting rights are, will take place before any UK bid to host in the 2030s is launched. That would have to include an assessment of the prospects of success in 2031 in the face of interest from the US, a traditional powerhouse in women’s soccer and a huge commercial market for Fifa.
However, sources close to the process insist nothing has changed as a result of Monday’s news, and that the commitment to bid to host the tournament at some point in the 2030s remains in place.
Bid partners will review their position following the outcome of the 2027 bidding contest, which concludes at Fifa Congress in Bangkok on 17th May.
Brazil is competing with a joint bid from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany for the right to stage that tournament.
