Uganda are participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first ever time, but their campaign has begun with a small controversy.
On March 14, 2024, Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) unveiled their jersey after a Jersey Design Competition. Manjeni Elijah's design was based on Uganda’s national bird, the Grey-Crowned Crane (hence the team name ‘Cricket Cranes’).
Elijah described the design as “where elegance meets strength, mirroring Uganda’s resilient spirit. The bold blend of vibrant colours symbolises unity, echoing the national pride. The jersey, with its feather-inspired patterns, pays homage to the majestic crested crane, capturing the essence of grace and power.”
The yellow jersey features a bold pattern of feathers in the sleeves, along with on the side of the trousers. It was this feather design that created issues for UCA as it was camouflaging the sponsor’s logo.

Hence, the ICC forced Uganda to remove the feathered pattern from the sleeves for enhanced visibility of the sponsor’s logo. In the new jersey, the feather patterns are present as a silhouette, but they are so faint that they can barely be seen, bringing the bold feel of the jersey down.
Meanwhile, the boldness of the feathers down in the trousers has also been reduced; now, the feathers are present only as a narrow strip.
These design changes have made New Jersey quite pale in comparison to Elijah’s initial design. The amendments were revealed just before the Uganda cricketers flew to the Carribean for the World Cup, causing much furor on local social media.
UCA’s public relations officer Musali Denis was quoted by Cricket.com.au saying, “The ICC asked for a change in the design, but we didn’t have enough time to make the required changes and had to compromise on the winning design. We lost just about 20% of the original design but the rest of the design is the same.”
Uganda will begin their campaign against Afghanistan at the World Cup on June 4 in Guyana.
