The Flamingos defeated Dominican Republic 1-0 in the final match of Group A at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday morning.
Nigeria finished top of the Group after winning all their matches, scoring nine goals, and conceding one as they stormed their way into the last eight of the competition.

The win ensured that Nigeria will battle USA in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Coach Bankole Olowookere made three changes to the starting line-up, bringing in Rokibat Azeez, Blessing Ifitezue and Ramotalahi Kareem in place of Onyedikachi Ekezie, Peace Effiong and Harmony Chidi.
He restored Effiong and Chidi after the hour mark, but it took a special effort from Moshood, scorer of the tournament’s fastest goal, to break the hearts of the hosts.
The Dominican Republic produced a solid defensive performance to frustrate the Flamingos as the first half ended goalless.
Captain Renata Mercedes and goalkeeper Rondon led a famous resistance against Nigeria, and the hosts deserved praise for their pushback that ensured the Flamingos made nothing out of 16 corner kicks.

Victory means the Flamingos top their group, three points better than second-placed Ecuador, who beat New Zealand 4-0 to finish with six points and set up a clash with Spain on Sunday. Caprice Chiuchiolo netted a brace.

Flamingos coach, Bankole Olowookere has sent a note of appreciation to Nigerians for their support as the team advances to the knockout stages of the competition.
He said, “I will not change our messages to Nigerians but to thank and appreciate them for their support. They should keep supporting us and having kept these vigils it will not go in vain.
“Tactically, we have been able to get convincing wins and I want to thank the players for adhering to the tactics.
“They are kids and sometimes they are filled with anxiety and I have to calm them down. During training, we have game plans and I always tell them to go by the game plans and assure them that the goals will come. They listen and follow the game plan and the goals are coming.”
Nigeria’s goalscorer, Shakirat Moshood is now the top scorer of the competition with four goals.
