There are two major factors that point in the direction of wingback Denzel Dumfries staying at Inter Milan and signing a new deal.
Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, highlight Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi’s desire to keep the Dutchman, and the fact that Tajon Buchanan has so far played only on the left.
Dumfries is a player whose Inter future has looked uncertain.
The reason for this is that the 28-year-old is currently out of contract with the Nerazzurri at the end of June 2025.
Therefore, if Dumfries were to head into next season without signing an extension, Inter would risk losing the former PSV wingback on a free transfer.
The Nerazzurri have no intention of that happening.
Therefore, Inter’s plan has been clear. They either want to have Dumfries sign a new deal, or sell the player this summer.
It has looked at times like Dumfries would be on the way out.
There have already been some rounds of talks between Inter and the Dutchman’s representatives. And in these negotiations, the distance between the Nerazzurri’s offer and the player’s demands has been notable.
However, there will be more talks later this month.
And according to Tuttosport, there is good reason to believe that they could be more productive than the last ones.
Firstly, Dumfries is perfectly happy where he is. The 28-year-old wouldn’t mind signing a new deal.
Then, Inter are in no rush to push Dumfries out the door.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is a big fan of the Dutchman. The coach feels that his pace and explosiveness are a unique weapon on the flank, and not something any other players in the squad have.
Therefore, Inzaghi would like to continue to have Dumfries at his disposal next season.
Moreover, it is far from certain that Tajon Buchanan would be a candidate to replace Dumfries next season.
Inter signed the Canadian in January. And there had been speculation that he is a player they have earmarked as a long-term successor to Dumfries should they sell the Dutchman.
So far, though, when Inzaghi has used Buchanan it has actually been on the left flank.
Therefore, it is not clear at all that the coach sees Buchanan as a player who can replace Dumfries at right-wingback like-for-like.
