Türkiye to face Netherlands for 15th time in history – Türkiye Today

The Turkish National Football Team will face the Netherlands for the 15th time in their history tomorrow in the quarterfinal match of the 2024 European Championship (Euro 2024).
The rivalry between the two countries’ national football teams began in 1958 with a friendly match that Türkiye won 2-1, thanks to goals from Metin Oktay. In the 14 encounters so far, Türkiye has won 4 matches, the Netherlands has won 6, and 4 matches have ended in draws.
In these matches, Türkiye scored 14 goals, while the Netherlands responded with 21 goals.
Official matches
Of the 10 official matches between Türkiye and the Netherlands, 8 were in World Cup qualifiers and 2 were in European Championship qualifiers.
Türkiye played their first official match against the Netherlands on December 16, 1992, at Istanbul’s Inonu Stadium. Under the management of Sepp Piontek, Türkiye lost the match 3-1, with Feyyaz Ucar scoring the only goal for Türkiye.
The return match was played on February 24, 1993, in Utrecht. Türkiye again lost 3-1, with the sole goal once more coming from Feyyaz Ucar.
The Turkish National Team also faced the Netherlands in the 1998 World Cup Qualifying Group. The first of these matches, played on April 2, 1997, at Bursa Ataturk Stadium, is remembered fondly in Turkish football history. Under Mustafa Denizli’s management, Türkiye won 1-0. The return match on October 11, 1997, at Amsterdam Arena ended in a 0-0 draw.
In the 2014 World Cup European Qualifiers, the match played in Amsterdam on September 7, 2012, was won by the host team 2-0. The return match on October 15, 2013, at Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu Stadium also saw the Netherlands win 2-0.
In the 2016 European Championship Qualifiers, the match on March 28, 2015, in Amsterdam ended in a 1-1 draw, with Türkiye’s goal scored by Burak Yilmaz. In the return match at Konya Stadium, Türkiye won 3-0.
In the first match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers Group G, Türkiye defeated the Netherlands 4-2 at Ataturk Olympic Stadium. Burak Yılmaz scored a hat-trick, with Hakan Calhanoglu adding the fourth goal for Türkiye.
Most significant defeat in last match
The last match between Türkiye and the Netherlands was played on September 7, 2021, in Amsterdam. The Netherlands won the 2022 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers Group G match 6-1.
This result stands as the most significant scoreline in the matches between the two teams. Türkiye’s only goal was scored by Cengiz Under in the 90+2nd minute.
