Manchester City will get a brief distraction from their current run of uncharacteristic form this week when the draw is made for the Club World Cup.
The event, taking place in the United States in the summer of 2025, is testing out a new-look format similar to the most familiar version of the international World Cup.
Ahead of the draw on Thursday, we now know Man City’s pot which determines who they can face in the group stage and who will not be an opponent until the knockouts, if at all.
Here’s how it looks.
They’re in Pot 1 of 4, meaning they avoid Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Flamengo, Palmeiras, River Plate and Fluminense until the knockout stage, should they make it.
Each group at the Club World Cup will comprise of one team from Pot 1, a team from Pot 2, one from Pot 3 and one from Pot 4.
With City being in Pot 1, we know they’ll face one team each from 2, 3 and 4.
Unless FIFA prevents teams from the same country being drawn together, Chelsea are in Pot 2 and an all-Premier League clash could be on the cards.
Also in Pot 2 are Inter Milan, the team City defeated to win their first Champions League trophy in 2023, and other such formidable European sides as Borussia Dortmund, Porto, Juventus and Atletico Madrid.
In Pot 4 are Inter Miami, which could lead to Pep Guardiola having a reunion with many players he coached at Barcelona such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and new head coach Javier Mascherano.
And assuming he’s still there come the summer, another Barca alumnus Neymar is currently at Al Hilal, who are in Pot 3.
