2025 high school soccer preview: preseason rankings, teams and players to watch and more
ARLINGTON — Joel Romero opened a text from his cousin Jose in March 2022 that gave him a glimpse into what his life could be.
The then-16-year-old watched a video clip of Arlington Martin’s boys soccer team celebrating after capturing the District 8-6A title. Jose was a part of that program and wanted to share the moment with his cousin, who loved soccer as much as he did.
Living in Venezuela at the time, Joel was used to a different normal — being pulled over by corrupt police, feeling unsafe to walk on the streets in his hometown and wondering if his soccer dreams would fizzle out because of a lack of opportunity in his native country.
He watched his cousin Jose, who had left Venezuela three years prior, celebrating district titles, learning English and adapting to a new life in the United States.

As far as high school sports in Texas are concerned, this academic year has belonged to the Dallas area.
Last December, Duncanville and DeSoto repeated as state football champions, while booming Anna won its first state title.
In March, three North Texas boys basketball programs won UIL state championships. Before Plano East, Lancaster and Oak Cliff Faith Family swept the boys state tournament’s three-largest classifications, two girls basketball programs – Duncanville and Frisco Liberty – won UIL state titles.
And this past week, D-FW teams dominated the UIL state soccer tournament in Georgetown.
