The Texas football program announced on Wednesday night that it had suspended linebacker S’Maje Burrell.
In a statement released by the school, UT coach Steve Sarkisian said that “We’re aware of the situation involving S’Maje Burrell and have suspended him indefinitely from all team activities for conduct detrimental to the program.” No further details were given.
Citing an incident report filed by the Austin Police Department, Lone Star Live reported earlier on Wednesday that Burrell was involved in the accident this past weekend that led to former Texas star T’Vondre Sweat’s arrest for driving while intoxicated. Burrell was reportedly the driver of the car that rear-ended a vehicle driven by Sweat. Burrell was not arrested or charged with a crime.
After the Lone Star Live story was published, several publications reported that Burrell was no longer on the UT football team. Texas, however, only said that Burrell had been suspended. As of Wednesday night, Burrell’s name was still listed on the team roster.
A second-year player, Burrell was rated as a three-star prospect during the 2023 recruiting cycle. The Fort Worth product did not appear in any games during the 2023 season.
