About the Cardinals
Saginaw Valley State enters the final weekend of the regular season, residing fifth in the GLIAC standings with an overall record of 7-5-4 and 5-3-4 in the league.
The Cardinals have won three of their last four games, holding a home record of 3-2-2 this season.
SVSU has netted 18 goals, led by Madi Bajis with five goals on 38 shots. Stephanie Strong and Rileigh Garbarz have facilitated a team-leading four assists, respectively. Strong has been quiet this season scoring but records 1.6 shots on goal per game, which ranks second in the league.
Junior goalkeeper Lainey Garbarzz has started 15 games and ranks 49th nationally and third in the league with 79 saves. She’s allowed 16 goals despite recording seven shutouts.
About the Lakers
Grand Valley State resides second in the league standings with an overall ledger of 11-3-2 and 8-1-3 in the loop. GVSU is also ranked third in the most recent Midwest Region rankings.
The Lakers have outscored opponents 25-6 and haven’t lost a game since the 1-0 loss at Davenport on Oct. 6. Since then, GVSU strung together five wins before playing to a scoreless draw against the Panthers in their second meeting on Sunday.
Emma Chudik and Alli French have netted a team-leading four goals for the Lakers, with Taylor Reid emerging as the top facilitator with five assists.
IUPUI transfer goalkeeper Cailynn Junk has made 14 starts, appearing in 15 games for the Lakers. She’s made 33 saves on 104 shots faced with nine total shutouts.
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech has played to a 6-9 overall record while going 4-8 in league play, currently sitting seventh in the GLIAC standings. The Huskies are coming off a single-game weekend, falling on the road to Parkside, 1-0 at Wood Road Soccer Field on Sunday.
The Black & Gold outshot Parkside 12-4, coupled with a 4-1 corner kick advantage, but were unable to find the equalizer in the second half of Sunday’s contest.
Junior goalkeeper Bri Barrows made four stops, facing 10 shots as veteran midfielder Julia Pietila recorded a team-leading five shots with one on goal.
Offensively, Michigan Tech averages 6.3 corner kicks to go with 14.1 shots per game, with 6.3 landing on goal per outing. Pietila posts three shots per game with 1.47 on goal while she leads MTU with six goals.
Pietila scored the first goal at home against the Lakers in 11 seasons in the first meeting of the season when then-No.1 ranked Grand Valley State won 2-1 at Kearly Stadium on Sep. 22. Goals have been hard to come by against the Lakers, who have allowed just six goals this season.
The Huskies also dropped their first matchup against Saginaw Valley State, 1-0 in Houghton on Oct. 4, where MTU outshot the Cardinals 18-9 and 13-7 in shots on goal.
One Last Thing
Michigan Tech is 12-7-4 all-time against the Cardinals with a road ledger of 6-4-1. The Huskies tied with Grand Valley State last season 1-1 on Oct. 13, marking just the third tie in the all-time series against the Lakers and the second on the road.
