Is Lindsey Vonn's rumored comeback the spark skiing needs to reignite its competitive spirit?
The 2024 season is shaping up to be an exciting year of comebacks as the skiing world prepares for the FIS Ski World Cup this December! Let’s go back to 2019, when Lindsey Vonn decided to retire after dealing with numerous injuries. It was a bittersweet farewell for the ski legend, who dominated the scene with a jaw-dropping 97 World Cup wins. But guess what? Rumors are swirling that Vonn might be making a comeback, and everyone’s buzzing about it!
The news totally surprised Sofia Goggia, who calls Vonn her “mentor” and close friend, but couldn’t be happier for Vonn. “I say that who will live, will see,” she said, adding even more excitement to the rumor mill. But hold up, it gets more exciting! Sofia Goggia is also gearing up for her own comeback, but before diving into that, she is feeling the love and support from Lindsey for her comeback.
In a recent report of Olympics, Lindsey Vonn opened up about how important mentorship is to her. She’s always been all about supporting fellow athletes, and when Sofia Goggia faced the tough challenge of multiple leg fractures in training earlier this year, Vonn was there to comfort her. Talking about their friendship, Vonn said, “Sofia and I are always in touch. I know she struggled a lot with this last injury, but when I spoke with her later, she was in a much better place.”

Vonn described Goggia as “someone who is very much like me,” pointing out that they both have that fierce drive and passion for skiing. She mentioned how Goggia never gives up, saying, “She will always keep trying, keep working hard. She’s very driven, very passionate. She skis with her heart, and I think that’s why it’s sometimes hard to emotionally handle injuries—because she wants it so badly and works so hard.”

Having gone through a similar injury herself in 2015, Vonn believes Goggia can totally bounce back. “She’s very motivated for the Olympics in Milano-Cortina,” she said, feeling confident about her friend’s comeback. With time on her side, Vonn reassured everyone, saying, “I would always count on her for a medal.” With that kind of support and encouragement, we’re all excited to see Goggia shine on the slopes again!
In 2015, Lindsey Vonn was on a roll, making a stunning comeback after tough injuries. She was winning races and had already secured the downhill title when disaster struck in Andorra. Just a few gates from the finish line in the super G, she got caught in soft snow, hyperextending her knee. It wasn’t a dramatic crash—just a frustrating moment, as the course hadn’t been properly cleared. Lindsey knows exactly what Sofia Goggia is facing as she prepares for her own comeback this season. As Sofia gears up for her comeback, she recalls her previous triumph, proving she’s a strong contender as she looks back at 2022 when she made an impressive return just hours after surgery!
After fracturing her right tibia and malleolus in a training accident back in February, Sofia underwent surgery and began her road to recovery. Now, with rehab behind her, she’s set to make her grand return at the FIS Ski World Cup 2024-25 this December. However, even this comeback doesn’t outshine her remarkable return to racing in 2022, which has gone down as one of the most epic comebacks in skiing history.
At Atomic Media Day, Sofia reminisced about some of the toughest races she’s ever faced, and one stood out vividly. “There are a lot of races I bring in my heart,” she said, recalling her gutsy performance just 24 hours after hand surgery in December 2022. After breaking her hand in a crash, she underwent surgery the same day but showed up the next morning to race. With her hand in a brace and poor weather conditions, she defied the odds, claiming her third downhill title of the season.
Fast forward to today, her grit remains undeniable. As she recovered from her foot injury this season, she never lost her determination. “I want to ski, I want to give it a go,” she said, showing the same relentless drive she’s known for. Now, the world is watching as Sofia Goggia once again prepares to pull off another stunning comeback!
