WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a soccer promoter’s antitrust lawsuit to go forward against FIFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation over the world governing body’s policy of not permitting a country to host league matches involving teams from other countries.
The high court order leaves in a place a federal appeals court ruling in favor of Relevent Sports, controlled by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

German prosecutors say a man who works for a German lawmaker in the European Parliament has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China. Federal prosecutors say the suspect was arrested Monday in Dresden. They didn’t specify which lawmaker he works for, but German magazine Der Spiegel reported that he works for Maximilian Krah of the far-right Alternative for Germany, who is that party’s top candidate in the European Parliament election. News of the arrest came a day after three Germans suspected of spying for China and arranging to transfer information on technology with potential military uses were arrested in a separate case.
Asian benchmarks are mostly higher after U.S. stocks clawed back some of their losses from last week. The yen weakened further to fresh 34-year lows. U.S. futures were mixed and oil prices rose. On Monday, the S&P 500 rose 0.9% to recover more than a quarter of last week’s rout. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.7%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 1.1%. Technology stocks led the way as yields stabilized in the bond market. Bank stocks were also strong following better profits than expected from Truist Financial and others. They helped offset a drop for Tesla, which announced more cuts to prices over the weekend. Tesla is one of roughly 150 companies in the S&P 500 set to report its earnings this week.
Australia and Papua New Guinea’s prime ministers have begun trekking into the South Pacific island nation’s mountainous interior to commemorate a pivotal World War II campaign and to underscore their current security alliance, which faces challenges from China’s growing regional influence. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese received an elaborate traditional welcome when he arrived by helicopter at Kokoda Village on Tuesday with his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape. The pair will walk 9 miles over two days along the rugged Kokoda Track where the Japanese army’s advance toward what is now the national capital, Port Moresby, was halted in 1942 in the wilds of the Owen Stanley Range.
LeBron James’ anger boiled over after the Los Angeles Lakers’ latest loss to the Denver Nuggets. His anger wasn’t centered on the Lakers and blowing a 20-point lead in the second half or at Jamal Murray’s game-winning buzzer beater to give Denver a 101-99 win. No, James was upset about the NBA’s replay center reversing a foul call on the Nuggets in the second half. James said Michael Porter Jr. clearly hit D’Angelo Russell in the face and that the call shouldn’t have been reversed. The Lakers are down 2-0 with the series heading to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday.
Satellite photos analyzed by The Associated Press appear to show a new compound of tents being built near Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli military continues to signal it plans an offensive targeting the city of Rafah. This tent construction is near Khan Younis, which has been targeted by repeated Israeli military operations over recent weeks, but Israel has said it plans to evacuate civilians from Rafah during an anticipated offensive on the southern city, where hundreds of thousands of people have taken refuge during the war, now in its seventh month. Also Monday, a failed rocket strike was launched at a base housing U.S.-led coalition forces in Syria, a U.S. defense official said.

A U.S.-based rights group says the World Bank has suspended funding for a tourism project in Tanzania that allegedly caused the suffering of tens of thousands of villagers. The Oakland Institute says the World Bank’s decision to suspend the $150 million project, which aims to improve the management of natural resources and tourism assets in a remote part of southern Tanzanian, was “long overdue.” It says the bank’s delay in taking action “resulted in serious harms for the local communities.” It has accused the World Bank of failing to hold Tanzanian authorities accountable for extrajudicial killings and sexual assaults relating to the expansion of a national park. At least $100 million has already been disbursed for the project, which started in 2017.

Zach Hyman had three goals and an assist in his first postseason hat trick, Connor McDavid had five assists and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 7-4 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Adam Henrique, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Warren Foegele also scored and Evan Bouchard chipped in with four assists for the Oilers, who had lost the first game of their last seven playoff series and had not won Game 1 of a series on home ice since 1990. Stuart Skinner finished with 33 saves. Mikey Anderson, Adrian Kempe, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Trevor Moore scored for the Kings, who were eliminated in the opening round by the Oilers in each of the previous two seasons. Cam Talbot had 38 saves.

India’s main opposition party is accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of hate speech after he called Muslims “infiltrators” and used some of his most incendiary rhetoric to date about the minority faith. The remarks sparked fierce criticism for peddling anti-Muslim tropes, and for breaking election rules which bar candidates from engaging in any activity that aggravates religious tensions. Critics of Modi — an avowed Hindu nationalist — say India’s tradition of diversity and secularism has come under attack since his party won power in 2014 and returned for a second term in 2019.
The 68th Eurovision Song Contest is taking place in May in Malmö, Sweden. It will see acts from 37 countries vie for the continent’s pop crown. Founded in 1956, Eurovision is a feelgood extravaganza that strives to banish international strife and division. It’s known for songs that range from anthemic to extremely silly, often with elaborate costumes and spectacular staging. This year’s favorites include nonbinary Swiss singer Nemo’s song “The Code” and Croatian singer-songwriter Baby Lasagna’s electro number “Rim Tim Tagi Dim.” Israel is also competing, but the contest has faced calls to expel it over its conduct of the war in Gaza. Pro-Palestinian groups say they will protest in Malmö and security will be tight for the final on May 11.
They were solved at last, an impossible puzzle that had somehow eluded the Lakers’ best mental and physical efforts for more than a year, for nine in a row of these increasingly familiar meetings.
DALLAS — The American Airlines Center crowd booed Mark Stone each time he touched the puck.
A team spokesman says the Philadelphia 76ers plan to file a grievance related to the officiating during their series against the New York Knicks. The 76ers lost both games in New York, with the Knicks rallying in the final 30 seconds for a 104-101 victory on Monday night. 76ers center Joel Embiid believed Tyrese Maxey was fouled when the Knicks stole the ball from him on the possession that led to the go-ahead 3-pointer by Donte DiVincenzo. Embiid also said coach Nick Nurse and some players were trying to call timeout on the play.
Cuban writer Leonardo Padura has managed to turn his series of detective novels into a social and political chronicle of Cuba, especially his native Havana. Born in 1955, Padura studied literature at the University of Havana and worked as a journalist for state-owned media in the 1980s. He won Cuba’s National Prize for Literature, and in 2015 the Princess of Asturias Award for literature in Spain. The principal character of Padura’s work, Mario Conde, a downtrodden, nostalgic, chain-smoking detective Conde, was even featured in a Netflix miniseries in 2016. The Associated Press recently interviewed the writer at his home in Havana, as he is working on a still-untitled new work of fiction.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is starting three days of talks with senior Chinese officials in Shanghai and Beijing this week. The trip comes as U.S.-China ties are at a critical point over numerous global disputes. The mere fact that Blinken is making the trip might be seen by some as encouraging, but ties between Washington and Beijing are tense and the rifts are growing wider. From Russia and Ukraine to Israel, Iran and the broader Middle East as well as Indo-Pacific and trade issues, the U.S. and China are on a series of collision courses that have sparked fears about military and strategic security as well as international economic stability.
Voters are going to the polls in North Macedonia this week for the first round of the presidential election, the seventh such vote since the Balkan country gained independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991. Seven candidates are vying for the largely ceremonial position. The brief campaign has focused on North Macedonia’s progress towards joining the European Union, the rule of law, fighting corruption, combating poverty and tackling the country’s sluggish economy. The two front-runners are incumbent 61-year-old President Stevo Pendarovski who is seeking a second five-year term with support from the governing social democrats, and 70-year-old Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, supported by the center-right main opposition VMRO-DPMNE coalition.
The core issue being debated before the Supreme Court on Thursday boils down to whether a former president is immune from prosecution for actions taken while in office. Never before has a former president faced criminal charges, so the court hasn’t had occasion to take up the question of whether the president’s unique role means he should be shielded from prosecution. Trump’s lawyers say presidents would be unable to function in office if they knew their actions in office could lead to criminal charges. Prosecutors say the lack of previous criminal charges “underscores the unprecedented nature” of what Trump is accused of.

Jamal Murray sank a 15-foot step-back jumper at the buzzer and the Denver Nuggets wiped out a 20-point second-half deficit to stun the Los Angeles Lakers 101-99 Monday night and take a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference playoff series. Murray’s fadeaway, falling-down game-winner provided the Nuggets with their first lead since 5-3 in the opening minutes and gave Denver its 10th consecutive win over the Lakers.
Malaysia’s navy says two military helicopters collided and crashed during a training session, killing all 10 people on board. The navy said in a brief statement that the helicopters were training Tuesday at a naval base in northern Perak state for the navy’s 90th anniversary celebration next month when the accident occurred. “All victims were confirmed dead on site,” it said, adding that the remains have been sent to the hospital to be identified.

Pennsylvania’s primaries will cement the lineup for a high-stakes U.S. Senate race between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and Republican challenger David McCormick. Tuesday’s contest will help decide Senate control next year. Casey, seeking a fourth term, is a stalwart of Pennsylvania’s Democratic Party. McCormick is a two-time Senate challenger and a former hedge fund CEO who lost narrowly in 2022’s seven-way GOP primary. McCormick’s candidacy is shaping up as the strongest challenge to Casey in his three reelection bids. They’ll share a ticket with candidates for president in the premier battleground state. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to win their nominations easily.
NEW YORK (AP) — Zack Gelof hit a two-run homer off Victor González in the ninth inning, and the Oakland Athletics stopped an eight-game losing streak in the Bronx by beating the Yankees 2-0 Monday following the ejection of New York manager Aaron Boone just five pitches in.
SAN FRANCISCO — More than once this season Bob Melvin has been left to lament the Giants’ lack of timely hitting to explain away their losses. With the Mets in town Monday to begin a three-game series, the manager got to change his tone.
