The Super Eagles of Nigeria have recorded their steepest decline in recent years, falling eight places to 44th in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.
This drop marks the biggest descent among all nations for November, following a disappointing international window.
The three-time African champions’ poor form saw them lose 2-1 to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo during the final phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. This defeat ended their unbeaten run in the series.
Prior to this loss, Nigeria labored to a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast, a result that secured their spot in the 2025 AFCON but also contributed to their global ranking decline.
Globally, Argentina remains the top-ranked team despite a loss to Paraguay in the World Cup qualifiers. Niger recorded the biggest climb, moving from 131st to 122nd, while DR Congo lost the most points.
On the African continent, Morocco retained the number one spot, ranking 14th in the world. Senegal climbed to second in Africa and 17th globally, while Egypt maintained third place on the continent. Algeria moved ahead of Nigeria to claim fourth in Africa, retaining their 37th global position.
This ranking drop is Nigeria’s sharpest since February 2024, when they rose dramatically to 28th in the world.
