The Sun Valley City Council on Thursday, Nov. 7, is set to discuss and could sign off on a proposal from Sun Valley Co. under which the city could provide more than $400,000 to support the Alpine skiing World Cup Finals.
The resort plans to request $434,000 from the city to help pay for spectator transport, a skijoring exhibition, live entertainment, racing bib draws and other items, according to a presentation included in the City Council’s meeting packet. The amount is $164,000 more than a previous request the resort made in July, during the city’s fiscal 2025 budgeting process.
In July, the resort requested $270,000 to support World Cup events, the Express reported. However, council members agreed to budget $500,000 for World Cup expenses.
Neither the July request nor this month’s request included a cost estimate for the city’s police and fire departments to increase their presence during World Cup events in the city, a service the resort says it will need.
Sun Valley City Clerk Nancy Flannigan stated in a Tuesday email to the Express that the city’s provision of that service will be discussed at the Thursday council meeting.
“We can’t estimate police and fire costs until we know what it is SVCO is requesting,” Flannigan wrote.
The resort did not respond by deadline to a question from the Express asking why the requested city contribution increased in size.
Requested cash contributions in the resort’s updated proposal include the following:
The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday in Sun Valley City Hall.
Ketchum’s City Council in October approved a memorandum of understanding under which the city will be an official partner of the 5850 Fest—a free festival scheduled to take place in downtown Ketchum during the World Cup Finals—and provide to the festival an equivalent of up to roughly $100,000 worth of services such as traffic control and trash and snow removal during the event, the Express previously reported.
Ketchum council members are also considering providing an equivalent of up to $50,000 in separate World Cup-related services for Sun Valley Co. near the Warm Springs base during the competition.

If you ever wondered who runs Sun Valley, here is your answer: Sun Valley Co. They are going to get the SV Council to subsidize the World Cup for them. This is one more step in SVC’s plan to pretty itself up for sale to Vail or Aspen or whomever. The management team is from Vail. Joined IKON pass. Perfected development rights to essentially double their number of resort rooms. Raised prices. These are all the things you do to prepare for a sale. I hope the residents of Sun Valley will like their new owners.
