Sudan Claim 2-Nil Win Against Mauritania In 2026 World Cup Qualifiers – THEWILL NEWS

June 07, (THEWILL) – Sudan took a giant stride towards booking a ticket in the 2026 World Cup, after a 2-0 victory over Mauritania in their Group B qualifier on Thursday. The win propelled Sudan to the top of the group standings with seven points, three clear of second-placed Senegal.
Saifeldin Bakhit gave Sudan an early lead in the 15th minute, putting Mauritania on the back foot from the outset. The home side’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Aly Abeid inadvertently scored an own goal in the 29th minute, doubling Sudan’s advantage.
With the two-goal cushion, Sudan controlled the remainder of the match, frustrating Mauritania’s efforts to find a way back into the contest. The victory was a testament to Sudan’s resilience and tactical discipline under the guidance of coach Kwesi Appiah.
Senegal, who are set to host DR Congo in the group’s other game on Thursday, will need to earn maximum points to keep pace with Sudan in the race for the coveted World Cup qualification spot.
