Back on the World Cup stage for the first time in eight years, Steamboat Springs’ Maddy Schaffrick has earned a World Cup halfpipe podium finish for the U.S. Snowboard Team.
Schaffrick was one of four American athletes to reach the finals of the women’s halfpipe event at China’s Secret Garden Resort on Sunday. The 30-year-old laid down the best overall score on the first of the finals’ three runs, scoring 85.25 points.
Dropping down for the third and final time of the day, Schaffrick already had secured a World Cup personal best and ultimately took third place, sharing the podium with teammate Maddie Mastro, who placed first.
It was Schaffrick’s first time competing in a World Cup event since February 2016.
Schaffrick and the rest of the U.S. halfpipe team next return to their home country Wednesday for the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix at Copper Mountain.
