All three Northland soccer teams that kicked off in the state tournament Wednesday would have their hopes of a title dashed in the quarterfinals.
The Duluth East girls would fall 5-0 to No. 3 Edina in the Class AAA quarterfinals at Spring Lake Park High School. The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the first half, then added three more goals in the second to secure their victory. This marked the Greyhounds’ first state appearance since 2010. They finish their season 16-4.
At White Bear Lake High School, the No. 4 Cloquet-Carlton girls played No. 5 Orono ultimately fell 2-1 in the Class AA quarterfinals after a shootout. Orono led 1-0 early in the first half, then with just about two minutes left in the game the Lumberjacks tied it 1-1 thank to a Makena Smith goal off a Lauren Hughes corner kick. This forced overtime, which ended scoreless sending the match to penalty kicks. Both teams missed their first shots, then made their next two, however Cloquet missed their fourth while Orono made two more to win the PKs 4-3. Cloquet-Carlton, who was riding their sixth straight section title, finishes their season 15-3-1.
Following their match the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (CEC) boys took the pitch at White Bear Lake. However, they would fall 4-2 to No. 3 Blake in the Class AA quarterfinals. The Bears led 2-0 at halftime, then added another in the second half before Noah Hansen scored to put the Lumberjacks on the board. Blake would take back the three goal lead before Hudson Snesrud cut it down to two again, but the comeback wasn’t enough. CEC, making their fourth straight state appearance, finishes their season 15-4.
