FIFA threatens sanctions over voting process for ‘Best’ awards
SPOKANE, Wash. — Some of the top soccer players from around the world could be staying in Spokane when countries compete in the 2026 World Cup.
Spokane and Gonzaga University have been selected as one of the options teams can select to be their “Team Base Camp.” This would make Spokane the city a team would live in, train and rest in while compete in the tournament.
Spokane, along with 48 other cities around the U.S., Canada, and Mexico can be chosen by teams wanting to stay close to the cities that games will be played at including Seattle.
In next steps, the final draw for the World Cup will take place December 2025. After which, teams will choose what city they want to stay in.
“We are excited for the opportunity to host a FIFA World Cup 2026 team in Spokane,” said Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown. “This announcement underscores Spokane’s growing reputation as a sports destination city and a key part of the statewide efforts to welcome the world’s game to communities throughout Washington. We look forward to next steps in the planning process, and the building anticipation as we get closer to the tournament.”
