La Gazzetta dello Sport analyses Italy’s downfall, warning that Luciano Spalletti has no time but that the Azzurri must qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Italy are licking their wounds after a miserable EURO 2024 exit in the Round of 16 at the hands of Switzerland.
FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and coach Luciano Spalletti refused to resign, but both have been harshly criticised by the media.
Fabio Capello said Spalletti was “arrogant”, while Luigi Garlando, one of the pink paper’s correspondents in Germany, warned the CT that he has ‘no time’ to turn things around and lead Italy to 2026 World Cup qualification.
Spalletti admitted at a press conference on Sunday that being a national team coach is not like being a club coach, so he must learn from mistakes and adapt quickly.
“There is no time,” warned Garlando.
“Italy must qualify for the World Cup because they can’t afford to miss out on the third consecutive edition despite not having Jude Bellingham or Harry Kane. It’s going to be tough.”
The 2026 World Cup qualifiers will begin in 2025, while the Azzurri and the other countries will learn their qualification group by the end of the year.
