A University of Southern Mississippi football player is dead following a shooting at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg.
According to Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem, a shooting investigation is underway following the death of 21-year-old Marcus “M.J.” Daniels Jr.
The coroner said they responded to a call at 219 Ivy Row Circle around 10 p.m. Tuesday, where his body was recovered.
The George County High School graduate played cornerback for the Golden Eagles after transferring from the University of Mississippi.
According to the coroner, Daniels’ body has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
University leaders released a statement Wednesday saying, “The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus.”
The statement went on to say, “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
