MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – South Beach is swapping surfboards for saddles this weekend as the 19th annual Beach Polo World Cup brings world-class horses and players to the sand.
The event promises an exciting blend of elegance and action, as fans gather to watch polo against the iconic Miami backdrop.
Local 10′s Alexis Frazier experienced polo training firsthand and shared her initial excitement, saying, “I had the opportunity to train like a pro — but I only got the basics down. If you’re interested in seeing how it’s really done, this weekend is your chance.”
The event kicked off Thursday with Polo Pride, but the main events run through Sunday.
According to event founder Miami Polo’s Tito Gaudenzi, polo holds a unique historical place.
“Many don’t know this, but polo is the oldest team sport known to mankind,” Gaudenzi explained.
In Miami, the heart of polo season lies out in Wellington at the Santa Rita Polo Farm, where over 100 acres provide space for over 200 horses.
The farm isn’t solely for elite athletes; it also offers training for adults and children alike.
While on the grounds, Frazier tried her hand at the sport with the help of Gaudenzi and a special horse named “Beyonce.”
When Gaudenzi asked, “You like yourself some Beyonce?” Frazier joked, “I love Beyonce. I’m the new Cowboy Carter, OK.”
Spectators can catch the action from a free viewing area on the beach. For those seeking an elevated experience, a VIP lounge offers ticketed access, complete with food, drinks, and prime views.
“We’re bringing not people to the polo; we’re bringing polo to the people. Smack on the beautiful beaches of Miami Beach. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Gaudenzi said.
The Beach Polo World Cup provides a chance to witness an age-old sport in a new setting, blending Miami’s beach culture with the sophisticated tradition of polo.
