European Champion Marcus Wyatt second ahead of World Cup title defender Matt Weston
PyeongChang (RWH) The Olympic and World Champion ahead of the European Champion and the World Cup title defender: this is the podium in the men’s skeleton at the opening of the IBSF World Cup 2024/25 in PyeongChang (KOR). Christopher Grotheer (GER, 2022 Olympic Champion and reigning World Champion) won the first race of the season in the pre-Olympic winter, ahead of 2024 European Champion Marcus Wyatt (GBR, 0.15 seconds back), and defending World Cup Champion Matt Weston (GBR, 0.63 seconds back).
Surprisingly in fourth place: Rasmus Johansen from Denmark. The 22-year-old, who was still in 17th place after the first run at the Olympic Sliding Center in PyeongChang, moved up a total of 13 places with the third-best time in the second World Cup run. He missed out on a historic first World Cup podium finish in men’s skeleton for Denmark by just 0.05 seconds but celebrated his best-ever World Cup finish.
Lukas Nydegger (GER), 2020 Youth Olympic Champion and 2024 Junior World Champion, finished 18th in his IBSF World Cup debut.
The best athlete from the host team in Korea was Jisoo Kim in seventh place.
After the first of eight races, Christopher Grotheer (GER, 225 points) leads the overall standings for the IBSF World Cup 2024/25 ahead of Marcus Wyatt (GBR, 210) and Matt Weston (GBR, 200).
