September 2011 saw three victories by Americas teams at the Rugby World Cup in the space of four days. Canada, the USA and Argentina all registered wins, doing so across the extremes of New Zealand from the northern most to the southern most Rugby World Cup 2011 host venues.
In Pool A, Canada were 25-20 winners over Tonga on September 14. Played at Okara Park in Whangarei, the match was the first for the Canadians in the tournament. Jebb Sinclair, Aaron Carpenter and Phil MacKenzie were try scorers for Canada. James Pritchard kicked 10 points. The win saw Canada downing the team that had faced the home team, New Zealand’s All Blacks in the tournament opener.
Four days after their first match of the tournament, the USA Eagles faced tournament debutants Russia in New Plymouth. The Pool C fixture featured just one try. scrum-half Michael Petri went over late in the opening quarter for the North Americans. Chris Wyles kicked 8 points. The USA Eagles were in control of the scoreboard for the bulk of the contest. Russia landed a penalty minutes after the start of the match and minutes before the conclusion. The match was played the day after Canada defeated Tonga.
Two days after the Eagles defeated Russia, Los Pumas faced the Stejarii. The match took place in Invercargill, the world’s southern most city to have hosted a Rugby World Cup match. Argentina were bonus point winners in a six tries to one victory. Santiago Fernández, Juan Manuel Leguizamón, Juan Figallo, Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino, Juan Imhoff and Genaro Fessia scored tries. Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga kicked 13 points.
