KUCHING (Nov 19): Sarawak is set to co-host the International Cricket Championship (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Kuching in January next year, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
According to the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, the preliminary round of the tournament, scheduled for Jan 18-28, will take place simultaneously in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Kuching.
It will feature teams from New Zealand, Nigeria, Samoa and South Africa.
The co-hosting will also be a platform to showcase Sarawak’s hospitality, culture and passion for sports to a global audience, he added.
“The event provides the young cricketers a platform to display their talent, with live broadcasts reaching over 200 countries.
“Six winning teams from the preliminary round will return to Kuching for the second round before qualifying for the semi-finals and final in Kuala Lumpur,” he said during his winding-up speech.
Abdul Karim added that the championship should also bring a significant economic impact by boosting the local hospitality, tourism and businesses.
“It will also inspire the interest among youths in cricket, and nurture future talents. Additionally, the success will enhance Sarawak’s reputation as a key venue for international cricket, paving the way for more global competitions,” he added.
